High wind warnings for Panhandle

Posted: Updated:

Wind gusts of 50 to 60 mile per hour hit Scottsbluff today, knocking over road signs, tree branches and tumbleweed.

Because the winds bring up a lot of dust, there's very poor visibility for drivers.

These conditions have closed down Highway 26 between Ogallala, as well as I-80 and Highway 30 between Sidney and Big Springs.

With the high wind and branches falling power outages are likely in the area.

Captain Mike Gaudreault with the Nebraska State Patrol urges drivers to drive with caution in treacherous conditions.

"Because the road and weather conditions are such that you may not be able to drive at the speed limit and you may have to go below the speed limit, so allowing enough time to get to your destination is critically important."

A high wind warning remains in effect until tonight.
