Doctors with the American Academy of Pediatrics say cheerleading should be considered a sport.
The Panhandle has more than six high school cheerleading teams, and these squads exercise and put together routines for game night.
The American Academy of Pediatrics says those routines have become a lot more physical and athletic.
So they want cheerleading to be recognized as a sport, so it will get the same safety rules and oversight that other sports have.
This would include on-site athletic trainers, limits on practicing times and better qualified coaches.
Studies show cheerleading injuries have drastically increased during the last two decades.
