Authorities say there was no civilian with a gun during Wednesday's lockdown of downtown Mitchell .
Mitchell's Chief of Police Mike Cotant says the ordeal began shortly after 11 a.m., when a man pounded on the police station's door and said what translated into "pistol to the head."
Cotant called for back-up from the State Patrol and Sheriff's Department. Upon arrival all agencies began to help search nearby residences.
Cotant helped search several buildings on Center Street, but no people or guns were found.
"And all of a sudden...the gentleman started talking to people that weren't around," explained Cotant. "So we decided at that time we'd go ahead, secure the situation and then I took him up to Regional West."
The man, 29-year-old Josue Acosta of Mexico, was brought to the psych ward at the Scottsbluff hospital. Today he was arrested on an outstanding warrant from the Scotts Bluff County Sheriff's Office. An immigration hold has also been put in place.
Chief Cotant says he commends all assisting agencies for keeping Mitchell safe from what could have been a very dangerous situation.
