Insurance company cancels home insurance for a K-9 officer

Posted: Updated:

An insurance company canceled a home insurance policy for a K-9 officer whose dog is considered a liability.

But American Family Insurance has since apologized to Douglas County Deputy Sheriff Andy Woodward.

They say they do not have a policy in place that covers people with trained guard dogs at home.

Sheriff Mark Overman says this is a non issue for Scotts Bluff County.

They are one of 79 counties that participate in a self funded insurance pool that handles liability issues.

"Every government entity has liability insurance, and it covers your law enforcement agency and all of the parts of it, including k9."

Douglas County, is one of Nebraska's 93 counties that does not participate in the program.
