Scottsbluff clarinetists selected to All State Band

Posted: Updated:

Two Scottsbluff High School band students get top honors and are moving on to the next level.

Clarinetists Kayla Schanaman and Marissa Yonts are among 155 students state-wide to be named to All-State Band.

Neither have been selected in the past; and the selection means more than just a job-well done. "Well for me, it means a whole lot because I did this for my dad," explains Yonts. "He passed away about four months ago- and so he was always encouraging me to do this kind of stuff, so I was very very proud when I made it."

Both students say they were nervous heading into auditions, but are now focusing on preparations for their performance in Lincoln in two weeks.

"We have five pieces of music we have to work on," says Schanaman. "We'll have our chair placements when we get there, so we need to work through all the parts in our music and just prepare for whatever."

Band Director Frank Ibero says he is very pleased about the girls' selection,  and says he strives to have several band members from Scottsbluff make All-State each year.
