One of the final phases of eliminating train horns in Scottsbluff is about to become a reality.
Scottsbluff's work on the "Quiet Zone" is complete, and tonight the city council will approve a contract for 'Burlington Northern Santa Fe' to complete their work.
The railroad has installed electronics at all but one crossings within city limits. The contract will let BNSF finish up at the Avenue I crossing, and begin the testing phase.
"I know it's taken an awful long time," says City Manager Rick Kuckkahn. "But when dealing with agencies that we're dealing with- we have federal, state, local, plus the railroad- so there was a very complex process and contractual arrangements to deal with."
Kuckkahn estimates the quiet zone project will be 100 percent completed in about two months.
