Attorney's seeking death penalty in Sidney murder case

Posted: Updated:

Cheyenne County Attorney Paul Schaub says he will seek the death penalty against a man charged in the shooting death of a Sidney woman.

Fifty-three-year-old Larry Martinez is charged with first-degree murder and use of a weapon in a felony in the July killing of 30-year-old Mandy Kershman.

Police say he shot Kershman because was angry over a text message from her. Schaub spelled out his intentions during a hearing on Wednesday.

District Judge Derek Weimer has given Schaub and defense attorney Kelly Breen six weeks to file information on the issue.
