Meat processors taking in deer to help feed the hungry

Posted: Updated:

Nebraska meat processors are doing their part to help feed the hungry.

Starting today, hunters can donate deer carcasses to the new 'Hunters Helping the Hungry' program.

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will pay the processing costs for at least 260 deer this season.

Staff at 'Bayard Processing' says a lot of area processors aren't participating in the program because a lot of required paperwork. But owner Dennis Greve is participating because he feels its important to help out people in need.

"I've been promoting this trying to get Games and Parks to do something about this meat instead of dumping it in a landfill."

The donated meat will stay local, too. Bayard Processing is having a local church pick up the mean and distribute it to needy families.
