New monument unveiled at Eastlawn Cemetery

Posted: Updated:

Veterans Day is a time to honor the men and women who have served our country.

A handful of people braved this weekends snowstorm to attend the unveiling of a new monument at Eastlawn Cemetery in rural Scotts Bluff County.

Several years ago, a widow moved her husband from the cemetery to a veterans cemetery in eastern Nebraska. The plot was given back, and cemetery board members decided to turn that space into a memorial bench for veterans.

"They need a place to sit," says Mary Jo Bassett. "Just to sit and remember."

Nebraska's VFW State Commander David Beran was on hand for the dedication. He says the new bench symbolizes much more than just a place to sit.

"Well any memorial means a lot to a veteran because it shows that people actually care about what we have done," explains Beran. "Anyone who has served in the military, whether in combat or in peace time, has given up a portion of their life for our country and our freedom."

Many local businesses donated time and materials so that the new monument could become a reality.
