Whooping cough on the rise

Posted: Updated:

With winter comes flu season.

But there's another illness people should fret, whooping cough.

That's because the nation is in the midst of a whooping cough outbreak.

In July, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported almost 20,000 cases nationally.

That number is twice as much as last year's.

And if the rate continues, this year epidemic could be the highest since the 1950's.

Health experts say with fewer people receiving vaccinations, the community is at a higher risk of getting whooping cough and spreading it to children.

Regional West Medical Center is recommending people get the T-dap Vaccination to help prevent the spread.

The Pertussis vaccine will protect patients from catching whopping cough.
