Old Gering school to be demolished and turned into housing

Posted: Updated:

A Gering property, where an old school stands may become a new housing development.

After months of negotiations Gering City Council members have approved the purchase of the old McKinley school building to make room for more homes.

The city will pay the current property owners $90,000, well under his original asking price of $150,000.

Susan Wilkins lives across from the building. She says she is happy that something is being done with the property.

"Pretty good, because it's been there quite a while but it's just been sitting there, I don't know what's the use of it being there for."

Because the former school is large and is contaminated with Asbestos it will cost more than $300,000 to take it down.

A grant from the Nebraska Department of Economic Development will pay for the demolition.

After the building is down, the proposed housing project will be considered and revamped.
