4H Dodge ball Tournament continues to grow in popularity

Posted: Updated:

Parents were skeptical when 4H members proposed a dodge ball tournament to be their new fundraising event. Five years later... The event is more popular than ever.

The Haig 4H club hosts its fifth annual dodge ball tournament at the Scotts Bluff County Fair Grounds this afternoon.

It was standing room only for spectators as they watched area kids duke it out on the court.

But the crowds- and the sheer number of participants- weren't here when the tournament first started.

"But it has evolved from 8 teams 5 years ago, to this year having 51 teams," explains Shawna Winchell. "And it just continually grows. We pass fliers out to the school and when we call to get the count for the year, the kids are already wanting the fliers before we get to them."

4H member Lauren Thomas has participated in the tournament every year. She is amazed on how well it has been received throughout the region.

"I just think its cool that so many kids over Scottsbluff, Mitchell and Gering are just so excited to join, and how it just came from a little idea into this big event."

Proceeds from today's tournament will be used for scholarships for seniors in the 4H program.
