Costs of proposed Scottsbluff utility hike explained

Posted: Updated:

The dirty jobs just don't come cheap any more.

The City of Scottsbluff is considering a utility hike to help offset the rising costs of waste management at the water processing plant.

Water Reclamation Supervisor Lynn Garton says that mounting federal requirements are costly for municipalities to keep up with.

"The ammonia levels are being reduced drastically," explains Garton. "Now they're asking us to start looking at phosphorous removal, nitrogen removal. Things of that sort really drive the issue of rate hikes."

An ordinance is being considered by the council for a 4.2 percent increase on fees for water, wastewater, and environmental services.

No action was taken during last weeks meeting on the ordinance because a quorum was not present.
