Posted: Updated:

And for those of you who are preparing your own turkey with a deep fryer there are some risks that you should be aware of.

This is turkey frying the proper way but one small mistake can cause a major disaster.

Scottsbluff Fire Prevention officer Zeke Bowen says people can do several things to avoid fires caused by a deep fried bird.

He says it's important to fry at least 20 feet away from your home and other flammable objects, he also added that the fryer should be on a flat concrete surface.

"Once you get your oil to the temperature you need, go ahead and shut off your fuel supply. So if there is an overspill or splash or something, there's not the extra fuel added to the fire, so to speak."

And when using a fryer always have an all purpose fire extinguisher nearby
