Winter wheat looks weary

Posted: Updated:

Nebraska's Winter wheat crop is off to a bad start because of this years drought.

Staff at the Panhandle Extension Center says Nebraska's Winter wheat has been slow to emerge.

The early crop is not in very good condition because it has been so dry.

Extension Educator Gary Stone says there's been less than one inch of moisture since the Winter wheat crop was planted,

"The concerns for next year are the amount of snow pack that we'll receive this Winter and early next spring. We definitely need a decent snow pack to give us enough runoff to fill the reservoirs up in Wyoming and provide enough water to our growers here in the valley."

0% of Nebraska's Winter wheat crop is rated in excellent condition, normally, 65% of the wheat crop rates good or excellent at this time of year.
