Gering puts its stamp of approval on Keystone Pipeline

Posted: Updated:

The City of Gering is putting its stamp of approval on the Keystone XL Pipeline.

During Monday night's council meeting, members discussed whether or not they wanted to endorse and send letters of support for the pipeline.

Recipients would include Governor Dave Heineman and the project manager of the Keystone Pipeline.

Council members approved the letters by a vote of seven to one.

The lone "nay" came from Councilor Jill McFarland, who didn't think the city had any business weighing in on the project. "I just wonder if this isn't probably outside of the scope outside of what we do," explained McFarland. "And not knowing exactly how our residents feel about this, I think it might be inappropriate for us to support something that possibly our constituents don't support."

McFarland cited concerns over the pipeline's re-route still touching a portion of the Ogallala Aquifer.
