Johanns committed to avoiding the fiscal cliff

Posted: Updated:

U.S. Senator Mike Johanns says priority number one is avoiding the fiscal cliff that is just weeks away.

During his weekly conference call, Johanns explains the proposals that Speaker John Boehner and President Barack Obama have submitted.

Obama's proposal includes 200 billion dollars in new stimulus spending, and Boehner's proposal calls for *no* new spending.

Senator Johanns reminds people that these are only initial proposals, but he hopes negotiations will continue until an agreement is reached.

"As I said before," explains Johanns, "I'm happy to be here right through Christmas, right through New Years to get this done. I believe it's that important."

Johanns says it's important to create long term sustainability for the budget and economic growth.
