Blood donations needed in the panhandle

Posted: Updated:

‘Tis the season to be giving … and staff at the West Nebraska Blood Center are hoping for the gift of life.

As the holiday season gets in full swing, many people don't have time to donate blood. But blood is needed daily at hospitals for many patients.

Donations stay entirely in the panhandle, and a single pint can save three lives.

Despite sixty percent of the U.S. population being eligible to give blood, only five percent actually do.

"Always getting new people in is helpful because our red blood cells, they expire within 42 days, and you can only donate every 56 days," explains lead phlebotomist Julie Dahlinger. "So having constant donors coming in is wonderful and helpful."

For more information on becoming a blood donor or to set up an appointment you can call the West Nebraska Blood Center at 630-2477.
