Storage wars to be discussed at Gering Council meeting

Posted: Updated:

The Gering City Council may vote on a controversy on whether to let the owner of a storage unit expand.

Neal Smith has owned storage units on M Street since 2000, and plans to expand. Smith is seeking a conditional use permit to complete the project.

He says he originally planned to expand by adding retail space on the front side of the lot, but the logistics proved to be unrealistic.

Opponents say the storage units would lower the property value of neighboring businesses and have threatened to move outside of gering.

But Smith says he feels a completed project would be a better option than a half-vacant lot.

"I would like to finish up the project," explains Smith, "Make it look like a completed endeavor, so M Street would have a completed project."

The City Council will hear both sides of the argument during tonight's meeting at 7 p.m., and will possibly vote on the permit.
