Congressman Adrian Smith taking a step towards making school lunch requirements more flexible.
The Department of Agriculture has decided to allow more grains and meat in school meals.
Congressman Smith says the changes are a step in the right direction.
Although the new requirements are more flexible, Smith says parents and local officials will need more flexibility to meet their budgets and nutritional requirements for students.
Smith says in order to do that these decisions need to be made at the local level.
The change comes after criticism from lawmakers that kids aren't getting enough to eat with the new requirements.
