Area schools on lockout following potential threat

Posted: Updated:

Gering schools went into "lockout" mode after receiving a threat by a former student.

Law Enforcement officers were made aware yesterday of a possible threat targeting schools on today's date, in relation to the Mayan calendar's end of the world prophecy.

Gering school leaders made the decision to have school, but lock all doors, requiring people to knock or call ahead if they wanted to get in to the building.

Scottsbluff Police have contacted and interviewed the male subject and say he and his family were cooperative.

Police Officers say he was a student at both Gering and the Valts Alternative School.

Superintendent Don Hague says the threat wasn't direct but it's better to be safe.

"So it was totally precautionary, You're always going to get challenged, Do you overreact or under–react and with the things that happened in the last week we thought we'd bear on the safe side," says Hague.

Scottsbluff Police say no arrests were made in the case.
