Scotts Bluff State Patrol stepping up seat belt enforcement

Posted: Updated:

In response to that increase in fatalities, patrolmen here in Scottsbluff plan a special enforcement push.

Troop 'E' in Scottsbluff conducted 12 seat belt surveys this year and found only about 50 percent of county residents buckle up.

That's well below the state average of close to 80 percent.

Starting in January, the agency will put more officers on the street to look specifically for people not wearing seatbelts.

Drivers will see most of the extra officers in the evening, when most of the fatalities involving people not buckling up occur.

The Patrol received a special grant from the Nebraska Office of Highway Safety to help pay for the special enforcement effort.
