New laws could be in the works to tighten up seat belt use

Posted: Updated:

A Nebraska Highway Safety official says new legislation could be in the works regarding what you do when you drive.

One proposal would apply to texting while driving while the other would make it a primary offense for drivers and front–seat passengers to not wear seatbelts.

Currently seat belt usage is a secondary offense, meaning drivers have to be cited for another issue first.   State Patrol Captain Mike Gaudreault says that they are both a problem in the Panhandle.

"You won't see a racecar driver get in a racecar without putting on a piece of safety equipment and that's what we're asking the public to do.  Please put on that piece of safety equipment each and every time you get in a motor vehicle."

Gaudreault also says the State Patrol will be out in force the next few months, cracking down on seat belt usage.
