Fischer among 20 other women sworn into the Senate

Posted: Updated:

Today the Senate made history by swearing in twenty women, among them one from Nebraska.

Deb Fischer became the first women from Nebraska to serve in the Senate as she replaces Democrat Ben Nelson. They all don't share the same beliefs but they do believe they can help to break down the gridlock in Washington.

They say they can not just help other women, but politics in general.   Fischer hopes that young women will look to her and believe they can have a career in politics.

"It was an historic election.   But what was really fun about it were the number of mothers and fathers who brought their daughters up to me during the campaign and said, Can we get a picture?  Can we get a picture?"  Because people realize it and things do change," says Fischer.

The ladies will be put to work right away, as they try to help tackle the debt ceiling.
