Tax reform could be key issue for Nebraska Legislature

Posted: Updated:

Lawmakers in Nebraska will start this session in better shape than two years ago, but now they are expected to argue with what to do with the additional money.

Legislatures will face a projected 195–million dollar shortfall in the state's two–year budget, a far cry from the nearly one–billion dollar budget deficit lawmakers dealt with in 2011.

York Senator Greg Adams says he expects debates over a proposal to expand Medicaid coverage.   They are also expected to debate funding for foster care services and the poor.

Governor Dave Heineman has signaled that he wants more tax cuts.
