A Senior at Gering High School was killed yesterday when her car was hit by a train at a crossing.

Scotts Bluff County Sheriff's Lieutenant Rick Spencer says early yesterday morning 17 year old Mikal Orozco was driving South on 21st Avenue when she tried to drive around the crossing arms at the crossing by Highway 92.

A train traveling east hit the passenger side of her car.

Orozco was transported to Regional West Medical Center where she was later pronounced dead.

Today students at Gering High School tries to cope with the loss of one of their classmates.

The school has a crisis team of more than five teachers and faculty who are trained in grief counseling.

The team plans to help students as needed through this tough time for the school.

"Obviously we worked with this young lady over the years that she was here, she was an excellent student who was headed to be a Valedictorian."

Hubbard says it'll take a while for the school, staff and students to heal.
