Local farmers meet to discuss ways to deal with drought

Posted: Updated:

Today was a day of learning how to deal with severe drought conditions for Panhandle farmers.

The drought has hit area farmers hard and new technology is being developed to help them deal with these weather conditions.

Some of the topics discussed today include pest management, soil fertility and water management.

Speakers from the Panhandle Extension Center say it's important to strategize for the next few years so farmers can get the most out of their crops.

"Sort of looking into our crystal ball trying to figure out you know, given this really drought, droughty conditions we're in, what's that going to do to pest and disease," says Extension Entomologist Jeff Bradshaw.

"So how does the grower address that?  It may affect the type of crop that he plants in that field the next year in he suspects he may have a carryover problem," says Weed Specialist Bob Wilson.

Both hope that with enough planning, growers will be able to minimize the effects of continuing drought conditions.
