Scottsbluff schools to discuss safety plans

Posted: Updated:

With school violence at the forefront, Nebraska schools are looking at emergency response plans and the possibility of additional police officers in schools.

Scottsbluff Public Schools have had their emergency response protocols in place for more than a year.

The plans include a school police officer, secured buildings, cameras, response teams and even go bags for emergencies.

Bob Kinsey, the President of the Scottsbluff Board of Education says local schools are ahead of other districts in being prepared for an emergency.

Come Monday, the board will meet to brainstorm if these plans need modifications or an update.

"It's better to have a plan of how to do it when it happens, than not have a plan. And you know, that was probably one of the biggest things that happened after the columbine shooting, after that law enforcement changed all their procedures," Kinsey said.

Kinsey says being prepared for any potential threat is key.
