Winter wheat crop better than expected

Posted: Updated:

Scientists at the Panhandle Extension Center are excited about one winter crop.

Soil Scientist Gary Hergert says the 2012 winter wheat crop turned out better than they originally expected.    He says a large part of that is because the soil back from 2011 was great because that was an above average year.

He's not so sure about next year's wheat crop because of the drought conditions we are in.   He says we are behind the eight ball in terms of moisture.

"If we get our normal average precip, march, April, may, we will probably have almost normal production," says Hergert.

Hergert says normal rainfall is going to be tough to get based on what Climatologist's are predicting.
