Fatal accidents making the community more aware of their driving habits

Posted: Updated:

The Scottsbluff Gering community has been hit hard.

In the past week three teens have been killed in car crashes.

While the community, particularly high school students, continue to mourn their loss, authorities hope these tragic accidents remind everyone to be safe behind the wheel.

More than 5,000 teens die in car crashes each year, in fact it is the leading cause of death among teen ages 16 to 20.

Now, with even more distractions like texting and driving, some teens say they're finding other ways to avoid the worst.

"Normally I do put my phone down in the console, so it won't distract me or I use it as a speedometer and put it up on the dash."

One of the passengers from the Thursday accident that killed two teens, Tyler hill, is still in critical condition at Regional West Medical Center.
