Members from the Scottsbluff School Board, along with teachers, staff, and administration members talked about increasing school safety during last night's board meeting.
This was Scottsbluff's first school board meeting since the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary.
President Bob Kinsey says it is important to stay proactive. "There's a feeling of if you live in a small community, this is never going to happen here," explains Kinsey. "And that's just not the reality."
During last night's round-table discussion, several plausible ideas were discussed.
One would be to fortify or eliminate glass at the schools' main entrances, and create a more secure vestibule.
People also agreed that increasing the number of security cameras and having someone monitor them in real-time could be very beneficial. "Our goal is there wouldn't be a place at the middle school or high school that isn't under a camera," says Superintendent Rick Myles.
One security measure that did not go over well was the possibility of adding an armed security guard at the schools.
