According to the FDA, almost 400 dog deaths in 2011 and 2012 are being linked to chicken jerky treats made in China.
Veterinarian Darcy Schlothauer says she hasn't seen this problem around the Panhandle but does warn pet owners to be selective in treats for pets.
She says that sometimes it's just best to forget about treats altogether.
"They really don't even need treats if you're feeding them a good diet and you know they get pretty dependent on those treats but it's kind of like we don't need that extra candy bar," says Schlothauer.
She also says to make sure to buy treats from a reputable brand and to make sure it was made in the USA.
