Wyo. lawmakers advance gas tax bill

Posted: Updated:

A proposal to raise Wyoming fuel taxes by a dime a gallon has cleared a second vote in the state House of Representatives.

The House on Thursday advanced a proposal to hike the tax from the existing rate of 14 cents a gallon up to 24 cents. The hike would raise about $70 million a year for the state highway system and local governments.

The House rejected a proposed amendment that would have increased the tax on diesel fuel more while increasing the tax on gasoline less.

Supporters of the tax increase say the state highway system and local governments need a steady source of road funding.

Some opponents have said the transportation department should be more efficient. They said working families can't afford to pay higher taxes.
