School Admins trying to prevent bullying once it extends past the school yard

Posted: Updated:

Administrators, teachers, and parents are all dealing with a new generation of bullying; far different than what *they* experienced growing up.

Students are now subject to bullying through Facebook and text messages- in addition to harassment they may face while on school grounds.

Scottsbluff Public Schools recently beefed up its district-wide bullying policy, and the tools available for reporting bullying have become more readily available.

"Reports of bullying are actually up," says School Board member John Selzer, "But ... that's because awareness is up."

Superintendent Rick Myles has asked lawmakers to review new legislation that would expand how schools can protect students from bullying when school is not in session.

"We sure would like to be able to stand up for a student in that way," explains Myles. "But at the same time, I think there are mixed feelings about it statewide. I think there are some who would say you know, all things considered, schools have enough to do."

Bluffs Middle School was declared by the Omaha chapter of the Anti-Defamation League's as an official "No Place for Hate" school.
