Department of Education takes steps to make sure students have equal opportunities

Posted: Updated:

Schools across the nation received letters this week, all with one thing in mind, student equality.

The Department of Education issued a statement Friday regarding students with disabilities and extracurricular activities.

The statement says schools must give these students equal opportunities to participate in extracurricular athletics, including varsity sports.

If existing sports don't meet the needs of students, the school has to create additional programs.

Scottsbluff Public Schools' Director of Student Services, Wendy Kemling says Scottsbluff schools already have such procedures in place.

"We all know that sports and extracurricular activities are a major part of all students' enjoyment in school, so we want them to enjoy school and have that ability," Kemling said.

Kemling says school staff have these conversations on a regular basis to ensure all students have equal opportunities.
