Gering's longtime Chief of Police Mel Griggs has announced he is retiring.
During tonight's City Council meeting, Griggs says that effective March 1st, he will no longer Chief.
Griggs has been Chief of Police for more than 23 years, and has done more than 40 years of police work in the area.
Griggs says that the decision comes with great sadness.
There is no immediate word on the next steps for beginning the search for Griggs' replacement.
