Gering Chief of Police retires after 23 years

Posted: Updated:

Gering's longtime Chief of Police is retiring.

Last night's City Council meeting ended with a surprise announcement.

Chief of police, Mel Griggs, gave his letter of resignation.

His retirement is effective March 1st of this year.

Griggs has been the Chief of Police for nearly 23 years, and has done more than 40 years of police work in the area.

He says the decision comes with great sadness but it's time for something new.

"I didn't find golf, it found me. I didn't find martial arts, it found me. And one day, just, retirement found me," says Griggs.  "I don't know how else to explain it. I've always believed in god as my guidance."

As of now, Griggs says his retirement plan is to ride his bike everyday and enjoy other relaxing activities.
