Sheriff says process underway to extradite main culprit in Geurts murder case

Posted: Updated:

Progress is being made on bringing the man charged with the 2008 murder of a Gering toddler back to the panhandle to face charges.

Dustin Chauncey has been indicted on charges of manslaughter and intentional child abuse causing death.

Those charges come from a grand jury that investigated the murder of Juliette Geurts earlier this month.

The child's mother, Charyse Geurts, has already been arraigned and won't have to appear in court again until a judge tells her.

However the main culprit in this murder should be in Gering sometime in the near future to face these charges.

"Dustin Chauncey is incarcerated in Colorado," explains Scotts Bluff County Sheriff Mark Overman. "There's a hold on him, there's a procedure the states go through to get inmates back in forth, and we're in that process now. It's just some paperwork issues, and we'll get him."

Chauncey *can* fight extradition back to Gering, which would create a more complex legal process to bring him back.
