Leaving your car idle in the morning to warm up could turn you into a victim.
Nebraska has no emissions control like Colorado, but it's still illegal to leave your car idle and unattended.
A state statute and Scottsbluff's law make it illegal, however police here don't actively enforce for idle cars.
Scottsbluff Police Captain Brian Wasson says it's a safety issue and people need to be aware they could be setting themselves up to be victimized by car thiefs.
Captain Wasson says they highly encourage people to never leave their keys in the car unattended and he's seen the worst that can happen.
"We do see several reports where when left out in the morning and its cold right now, someone will be walking down the street and see the opportunity to finish their tour home with someone's vehicle," Wasson said.
Wasson also reminds Scottsbluff residents to never leave your child in the car alone, whether the car's idle or not.
