Gering women target of phishing scam

Posted: Updated:

A Gering woman has a brush with losing everything in her bank accounts after becoming the target of a "phishing" scam. One unsolicited phone call almost turned into financial ruin.

Barbara York received a call this week from a man posing as a Microsoft technician.

"And I said what's wrong,?" recounts York. "And he said if you don't have it fixed now...your computer's going to crash."

York gave permission for the caller to remotely access her computer to "fix" the problem.

"He started talking about PayPal and I said 'Is this going to cost me?' And he said, yes absolutely."

York says she had a feeling something wasn't right. So she called Bytes Computer and Networking Solutions, which confirmed her suspicion. "They told me right away, they said it's a scam."

"In order to set up a PayPal account, you need either a debit card with all the security stuff with it, or a bank account number," explains Bytes technician Jason Hamilton.

"They said if we had given them the permission to go ahead with the PayPal, they would have had all our information," adds York.

Hamilton says *catching* the people behind these scams is next to impossible. "These scammer's are probably not American. A lot of them have very thick Indian accents, and they're hard to understand."

And they're smart enough to hide all traces. York says she wants others to learn from her mistake ... which could have been more costly.

"Just be cautious. Because they are out there to get your checking account numbers ...whatever they can get from you."

To avoid becoming a target yourself...never give out *any* personal information to an unsolicited caller. If you do receive a suspicious phone call, hang up and call the police immediately.
