Riverside Zoo helps out food pantry with community help

Posted: Updated:

This weekend many people in the Panhandle got the chance to see some animals at the Riverside Discovery Center for a good cause.

The zoo took part in a canned food drive, offering discount admission to anybody bringing in non–perishable food.

Zookeeper Michael Gillen says that it's important to give back to the community.   He says the zoo is thankful for the support they received through fundraisers in the past few months and this is their way to give back.

"The community has always been so supportive of the Riverside Discovery Center coming out and visiting us and so we wanted to give back to the community and taking food to the local pantry is something we thought would better the community and help everyone," says Gillen.

Gillen says the zoo is open during the winter, weather permitting and invites everybody to come out for a visit.
