Scotts Bluff County Commissioners to hold public hearing for Sheriff's patrol car request

Posted: Updated:

A panhandle Sheriff's office is in desperate need of funding.

Scotts Bluff County Sheriff Mark Overman is asking county commissioners to amend his budget.

The sheriff made the request for two new patrol cars, costing $61,000.

Overman emphasized the funding for the cars would not come from property taxes, but unused insurance money leftover from last year's hail damage.

Both of the cars being replaced have over 100,000 miles on them.

The Sheriff says having the new patrol cars is a matter of safety.

"Given the county's budget situation, our cars fell victim to the budget process and we understand that, but I came in before to lobby for that not to happen," Overman said.

The commissioners will hold a public hearing in two weeks to further discuss the sheriff's request.
