Decrease in teen mothers, increase in average birthing age

Posted: Updated:

A KOTA Territory doctor says a decrease in teen mothers contributes to the increase in Nebraska's average birthing age.

National birth rates are down, While the average age of women giving birth to their first child is on the rise.

According to 2011 statistics from the Department of Health and Human Services, Nebraska saw the lowest number of births in the past decade.

Statistics also show an increase in the average age of first–time mothers.

OBGYN Doctor Emily McCarty says that a decrease in sexual promiscuity among teens may be to thank.

"I think we do see a trend toward women being somewhat older when they choose to have their families," says McCarty.  "And nationally, as well as here, there is a large decrease in teen births so, of course, that's bringing that average age up."

The average age for women giving birth to a second or third child has also increased.
