Nebraska Senators advance heart screening bill for newborns

Nebraska Senators advance a bill to require heart screenings for newborn babies.

The screenings can help doctors with early detection of potentially serious health problems.

The bill requires doctors to order the test in hospitals and birthing facilities.

For births in other places, parents are responsible for their child's screening.

Senator Jim Smith introduced the bill after speaking with a mother who's child was diagnosed with congenital heart disease.

Smith says the test is painless and inexpensive.
