Eastern Wyoming College celebrates Black History Month

Posted: Updated:

February is Black History Month, and one KOTA Territory college is trying to educate people about some of the most influential African Americans in state's history.

Eastern Wyoming College in Torrington is currently displaying a collection called "African American Life in Wyoming."

The photos tell the story of how African Americans helped shape Wyoming's history over the past 150 years.

The display is on loan from the Wyoming State Archives, and Assistant Library Director Casey Debus says many interesting people are profiled in this collection.

"Well there are several names," says Debus. "One that comes to mind right now is the Byrd family from Cheyenne- They are one of the most prominent families."

James Byrd was Wyoming's first black police chief, and his wife Elizabeth was the first African American elected to the Wyoming Legislature.

This display is in the library at E.W.C. and is free and open to the public until the end of the month.
