Gering City Council trying to beef up tourism efforts

Posted: Updated:

One issue that the Gering City Council is focusing on for 2013 is tourism in the area.

Executive Director of the Gering Convention and Visitors Bureau Karla Nieden–Streeks met in front of the City Council, talking about ways to bring more tourists to Gering.

She says one of the big issues is signing throughout the outskirts of town.   She says more signs need to be in place, directing people to the hot spots, like the monument.

Nieden–Streeks says the group were out in force at the National Western Stock Show in Denver, bringing more exposure to the area.   She says things like this and the success of last year's Nebraska Travel Conference put Gering on the right path.

"It met our goal of bringing back a big piece of business to Gering and repeat business is one of the things we're going to work aggressively to do and it gave us great statewide exposure for out conference and meeting facilities, for all of our community assets," says Nieden-Streeks.

Nieden–Streeks also says another focus is creating more lodging around the civic center.
