Ash Wednesday and Lent just around the corner

Posted: Updated:

One Catholic church official in KOTA territory reminds people about the importance of celebrating Lent.

Ash Wednesday is tomorrow and marks the beginning of Lent.

For the next 40 days and 40 nights, religious observers will pray, practice self denial and do works of charity.

Father Gerald Harr says the purpose of the lenting period is to become a better person in the sight of the lord.

He reminds us Lent is about more than giving up salt or sweets.

He says lent is a period to work on the faults and failings that hurt ourselves and others in this world as we prepare for the next.

Father Harr believes it's important for everyone to sacrifice something for the lenting period.

"We're more than just physical beings, you know, we have a soul that's eternal and we have to get right with god.   There's that longing.   It's a universal longing.   It's not limited to those of us of catholic persuasion," says Harr.

Father Harr says this year he plans to give up butter.
