Pet spending rises during recession

Posted: Updated:

Despite the poor economy, American pet owners continue to spend big money on their pets.

It's not just the Westminster Best-of-Breeds that are costing American's serious money.

According to the American Pet Products Association, the pet industry grossed nearly  $53 million-dollars last year.

That figure has risen almost 30% in just five years.

Not even the Nation's struggling economy has stopped pet owners from increased spending.

The prospering pet industry doesn't surprise Dr. Darcy Schlothauer.

"In times of stress and financial stress, people really appreciate what their pets can do for them. And help alleviate some of that stress," says Schlothauer.

The pet industry is one of few that has seen significant financial gain despite the Great Recession.
