Alliance celebrates 125 years of rich history

Posted: Updated:

Box Butte County has a lot of surprises. But its rich history is not one.

Alliance celebrates its 125th birthday this year.

But over those years, things have changed a lot.

Alliance used to have streets lined with dirt, until the 1920's when the city's brick streets were finished.

Becci Thomas, the Director of the Knight Museum, says the new streets were the cobblestone of the 20's and the echo they make is something very unique.

As you continue down Box Butte Avenue, you'll notice the infamous courthouse.

It's on the National Registry, but its history's what may grab your attention.

Thomas says the courthouse was moved from Hemingford to Alliance, all by train.

"These are the stories we want people to know of, of who we are, how we got here, how we live and how we look towards the future, because your history does impact your future," Thomas said.

The courthouse was moved the 20 mile stretch once Alliance took over Box Butte's first county seat from Hemingford.
