KOTA Territory woman celebrates 105th birthday

Posted: Updated:

The Great Depression, two world wars, the birth of television and the internet. Marie Jones has lived through it all.

Her long life right here in KOTA Territory -105 -years to be exact -  is keeping her family close.

In the last 105 years, Hyannis, Nebraska native Marie Jones has lived in Denver, Alliance, and the Black Hills.

Her nephew Jerry Perratt of Rapid City says that her birthday now serves as a family reunion.

"I've kind of helped get this started ever since she was 97 years old," explains Perratt. "And now we're up to 105 and its just a good time doing it."

"It's fun to see our cousins from South Dakota and elsewhere," adds Cherie Gorman of Plattsmouth, Nebraska. "We don't get to see them very often.

Dozens of relatives convened to visit Marie to celebrate her 105th birthday on Saturday afternoon.

Her nieces and nephews say that she was always their favorite aunt because she spoils them.

"We just couldn't wait for aunt Marie to come home because we all got these special candies that we would never eat during the year," says Kathy Kaufman of Elk Creek, Nebraska. "But she was everybody's favorite aunt. "

"She was the kind of aunt as we grew up who never missed a birthday," adds Perratt. "You could always count on a card and a couple of dollars in the birthday card."

Marie Jones was born in Hyannis Nebraska in 1908, says things are much different from when she was a girl. "I think about it a lot," says Jones. "And its changed a lot since the last few years."

After moving around the region, she now lives in an assisted living home in Alliance. But family says she's still doing fine on her own.

"She was up on everything," says Kaufman. "Even though she would get older and maybe her hearing might go, she was still very active."

"She can walk better than I can," adds Kaufman's husband Brian. "She's doing very well. We expect to be here for 5 more years.

Even Aunt Marie was overwhelmed with the turnout for her birthday today. "Well it was a great time"

And even at 105 years old, you can bet that this birthday girl saved room for cake and ice cream.
